Wine, Beer & Western CheerThis Saturday from noon to 3 p.m., Marv and Paulette Teixeira of Tres Hermanas Vineyard host a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Maria Valley. The event spotlights Central Coast wineries, breweries and purveyors of fine food.
Participating wineries include Cambria, Firestone, Fess Parker, Buttonwood and Lucas & Lewellen.
Breweries include Firestone Walker Brewing Company, Santa Maria Valley Brewing Company, and according to the flyer, Pacific Beverage which is probably the largest and most important beer distributor in this part of California.
Food vendors will include The Radisson, Dino's, Babe Farms and Trader Joe's.
A good cause, plan to spend an afternoon under the oaks at Tres Hermanas Vineyard for the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Maria Valley. Tickets are $60 per person and they are available in advance at Dino's Delicatessen on Main Street or at the Boys & Girls Club.
Directions are easy. Travel east on Betteravia Road 18 miles from Highway 101. Watch for signs. The vineyard is located at 9660 Foxen Canyon Road.

Santa Barbara Harvest Festival
I just got a flyer from the Vintners' Association promoting the upcoming "Celebration of Harvest' which is set for Saturday, October 11, noon to 4 p.m. at Rancho Sisquoc Winery. Looks like no more food purveyors! Fifty bucks gets you in for the wine and the music, and you bring the picnic.
Bad karma or what? I had reported in the column a while back that the Vintners' Association has rescheduled the 2004 Vintners' Festival from April to May, and reducing it to one day. The vintners' brochure I got promotes the date-May 15, 2004.
It got me thinking, that's about the time the wineries in Paso Robles hold their festival, and have been since 1983-always the third Saturday which is also Armed Forces Day. I called the Paso Chamber of Commerce to check, and sure enough-the Paso Robles festival is scheduled May 15. How smart is that? I wonder why the Santa Barbara organization chose the same date, and not May 8, or May 22. Bad karma. (You can tell I grew up in the sixties.) Maybe just poor planning.
Speaking of Paso Robles, the friendly person I spoke with at the Chamber told me the Harvest Wine Tour was coming up October 17-19. Visit their website at www.pasowine.com
