And the usual elaborations from the Bloody Pulpit:
-
Fetzer 1983: This was served blind as a mystery wine. I was guessing an
old/tired Zin from around the '89 or '90's vintage. Surprise.... this was
a bottom of the line Fetzer from the '83 vintage. Given to James by a friend
who's husband had left it in his office for years under miserable storage
conditions. Far better condition than it had any right to be.
-
2820 Wine Company: I bought both of these wines on a recommendation of
a friend. 2820 St.Helena Hwy happens to be the address for Ballentine Wine
Company. One presumes that this is excess wine being unloaded under a 2'nd
label by those folks.
-
Quinta do Alqueve Syrah: First Portugese Syrah I've ever see'd and a mightly
impressive one at that. This showed up on my doorstep as a gift from Brian
Pusser, who, apparently, has followed my tasting notes and bloody pulpit
from the very start. Thanks Brian for educating me on this wine. And for
all the rest of you who read my notes....get those btls in the mail right
now!! :-)
-
Quinta do Alqueve Touriga: Larry Archibald noted I had the Syrah and happened
to have this wine, so brought this as a mystery wine. This is, of course,
one of the important Porto varieties. The few that I have had have struck
me as pretty hard/tannic and needing of age. Almost reminds me a bit of
Norton/Cynthiana in character, with some exotic perfume that they lack.
A variety that should be more widely planted I think.
-
Jade Mountain Syrah: This 2002 was the first, I believe, made by Doug Danilek
under the new (Chalone?) ownership. Not sure the source of these grapes.
They have, in the past, sourced from both HudsonVnyd in the Carneros and
the ParasVnyd on Mt.Veeder. I've always been mightly impressed w/ the Paras
btlg, less so w/ the Hudson. This was, however, a very impressive Syrah,
whatever the source, and I hope a harbinger of Doug taking Jade Mountain
to the next higher level. JacobFranklin PS: This is made by Ray Coursen
of Elyse WineCellars, named after their son. He has two other vnyds he
makes PS from. Every JF PS I've had I've been mightly impressed with. Ray
is making some of the best PSs being made in Calif these days; plenty of
structure & tannins for the long haul, but also loads of fruit not
often found in Calif Pets.
