The Tom Hill Archives

The Los Olivos Wine & Spirits Emporium presents the musings and reflections of Tom Hill. We think it's great that Tom, who has sampled so many wines, has shared his tasting notes with us. We do have, or have had for sale a few of the wines Tom writes about, and we include a link to our stock page whenever it is a producer we carry (but since the stock page is kept up-to-date and the wines are for sale, don't expect any but the newest of wines to show up in our stock!). Mostly though, since we specialize in County of Santa Barbara Wine and Central Coast Wine, we don't carry a lot of the wines Tom writes about. But we think it is important that you be able to have an idea what they're like in case you are planning to buy some somewhere, or have them in your own collection. Enjoy.

Here are Tom's notes from March 24, 1998:

And the usual pontifications from the bloody pulpit:
  1. The Rosemont Balmoral '95.... incredible wine. Very intense loaded w/ everything and the structure for aging over the long haul. Very Grange-like.
  2. The Biale PS '95 was probably their best '95 wine. And one of the most aromatic fruity PS I've had in a long time. Great stuff.
  3. Lane Tanner Syrah: given to us compliments of Bob Senn at the Los Olivos Wine & Spirits Emporium. Her first Syrah and a terrific one it is w/ lots of Rhone character. Just released. I've always been very impressed w/ her Pinot Noirs & this is very much in her style w/ lots of toasty/pungent oak. This lady make GOOD wines across the board.
  4. Jade Mountain: Both of these Rhone blends were very well made wines. I've been very much impressed w/ what Doug Danielac (sp??) has done here the last few yrs. Definitely a winery to keep one's eyes on in the Rhone game.
